In 1977 Rosenquist acquired a five-story building on Chambers Street in Manhattan. Rosenquist turned the building into a combination studio and residence. Late in 1979 Rosenquist began work on the concept for Star Thief, a 17 x 46-foot painting, and in 1980 painted it at the Chambers Street studio. Bob Adelman photographed the complete process of Rosenquist producing Star Thief for an article by Todd Brewster in the February 1981 issue of Life magazine entitled "Evolution of a Painting."
